CT Scanner Review

State-of-the-art CT scanner

Lymington’s new CT scanner was installed and working in July 2019.

Its purchase was made possible by the generous donation from the Friends of Lymington Hospital. Since it was installed we have performed over 6,600 scans which roughly translates to between 400 and 450 scans a month.

The new CT scanner is one of the most modern and best performing models available which now means the scans we perform are of the highest quality, performed in the safest and best possible way. We are now able to perform scans with one quarter of the x-ray dose of older equipment, and with a lower dose of the contrast injection we often have to use.

The images we can now produce are of the highest quality, which allows our radiologists to make rapid, confident diagnoses. The operating speed of the scanner means that we are able to process more scans and make more accurate diagnoses than ever before. This means a reduction in waiting times and an improved patient experience. Additionally, the new scanner is more aesthetically pleasing and the opening for the patient is larger than before. This combined with an overall increase in speed means a much improved patient experience. The speed of the scanner means that we can keep waiting lists as short as possible, despite the recent Covid19 crisis.

We now also have the capability of increased image and diagnostics options. This means that where patients previously had to travel to either Southampton or Bournemouth for certain highly specialist diagnostic images, they can now be performed at Lymington New Forest Hospital.

In short, the hard work and generosity of the Lymington Hospital Friends and their donors has meant that residents of Lymington and the New Forest have rapid access to the very latest and best in medical imaging equipment, close to their homes.
